Parent & Student Book Club

What’s the big idea?

Starting in October (on Tuesday the 12th), we will begin hosting book club meetings for our students and their parents every other month or so.  It is our hope that this will provide an ongoing opportunity for parents and their children to read and discuss some of the quality literature that is published for young people today.  Many parents and students attend each meeting, but some pick and choose as their family schedule fits.  Signing up as interested on the form below does not mean you have to attend every meeting.  Book club dates will be listed on our team website soon.

Our book group will meet from 6:00pm – 7:30pm in our homerooms (Tawasentha House, Rooms 108 & 109), where we’ll discuss our books.  This is the tenth year we’ve run the book club and we’re excited to begin.  How the reading gets done is your choice: parents may read aloud to their children (or vice versa), students and parents may read separately and discuss the books along the way, students may listen to audiobooks, etc.  Anything goes…the important thing is that parents and children are reading and talking about books together at home.

What will our first book be?    Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko

This historical fiction paperback is readily available in bookstores and libraries.  Please let us know if you can’t find a copy.  Students and parents vote on our November book at the end of the October 12th meeting.

Will there be food?      We’ll provide some light snacks and beverages for the first meeting, and ask parents and students to sign up for future meetings.  You should definitely plan on having dinner at home before coming to book club; the snacks won’t be that substantial.

So, parents & kids…get started reading and discussing Al Capone Does My Shirts together at home, and join us at FMS on October 12th.  You’ll be glad you did!

“without pictures and conversation?”
